Our Football Is The Only Real Football. Europe Just Proved Why
There are many reasons to assert that American football is the only genuine football. And if you still need convincing, just look at the uproar following Kylian Mbappé’s joke regarding Mao Zedong.
In a recent backstage interview for a French digital show, the Real Madrid star was asked about his favorite meme. He chose one that humorously portrayed him as Mao Zedong, the infamous Chinese dictator.
First off, it’s pretty hilarious; secondly, Mbappé isn’t Chinese; and finally, Mao is long gone and wasn’t exactly a good person, so why the fuss?
Nevertheless, within just days, both the soccer star and the president of La Liga felt compelled to issue formal apologies. This came after Chinese sponsors withdrew their support from the French player—possibly at the behest of the Chinese Communist Party.
All over a joke about Mao Zedong, who, by the way, was responsible for the deaths of tens of millions. His death toll far exceeds that of both Hitler and Stalin—by more than 25 million.
This scenario isn’t surprising. It often happens when big corporations are seduced by the allure of the Chinese market: the pressures imposed by the CCP quickly align with corporate priorities.
And soccer isn’t the sole sport involved in this issue.
Take, for instance, Houston Rockets executive Daryl Morey, who voiced support for Hong Kong’s pro-democracy movement back in 2019. The NBA faced a public relations crisis as a result, eventually expressing regret over Morey’s comments that “offended” Chinese fans. Boring.
China decided to take NBA games off state television, but after a yearlong hiatus, the league returned to screens.
The takeaway? Cross the powers that be in China, and you risk losing their business.
But here in America, we enjoy freedom—making American Football unequivocally the only real football. What they play in Europe? That’s soccer, plain and simple.
In our free states, we understand that free expression is crucial. We criticize leaders, make fun of politicians, and debate our nation’s shortcomings without the need for apologies.
Of course, we’re not perfect. Lately, it seems our leaders have been a bit too accommodating to a certain Middle Eastern ally, much like soccer treats China. Still, it’s a far cry from what’s happening over the ocean.
So we’ll continue to embrace our tackles, touchdowns, and definitely more engaging games here in the land of the free.
If the rest of the world chooses to compromise their sport for China, that’s their choice. Personally, I’d rather keep making jokes, especially about some of history’s most notorious figures, without navigating an international apology or having a PR crisis manager on speed dial.
God bless America. God bless Sunday Night Football. And someone please remind Beijing that it’s okay for jokes to be funny.
