Well-known baby gripe water taken off the shelves due to harmful, undisclosed alcohols: FDA

Concerns Emerge Over Baby Sleep Remedy Safety

A widely used baby sleep aid is potentially dangerous for infants, prompting urgent warnings from health officials.

Pacific Health Sciences has announced a voluntary recall of Lot 25122bw of its Babies’ Magic Tea brand Baby Sleep Gripe Water. This recall follows findings from Food and Drug Administration (FDA) testing that identified harmful alcohols not listed on the product label.

The presence of ethanol, methanol, and isopropanol was detected in the product, with lab tests showing levels of about 8.3% ethanol, 0.35% methanol, and 0.48% isopropanol.

The FDA has cautioned that exposure to these substances can pose serious health risks to infants. Depending on the amount consumed and the child’s age and weight, these alcohols may severely depress the central nervous system.

In its health warning, the FDA noted that prolonged exposure to ethanol could lead to long-term developmental problems, such as coordination issues and behavioral changes. Immediate symptoms can include drowsiness and nausea or vomiting.

The recalled gripe water was sold in 4-fluid-ounce amber bottles inside blue cardboard boxes, and it included an oral syringe for use.

Officials emphasized that consuming large amounts could significantly increase the risk of respiratory depression, which is particularly dangerous for infants.

This specific batch was distributed nationwide through Amazon and the website of Secrets of Tea, an organic herbal remedies retailer.

Marketed as an over-the-counter herbal liquid supplement, the product is intended to ease gas and hiccups in babies, consisting of ingredients like ginger root and sodium bicarbonate.

It also claims to feature a unique “bedtime blend” that includes chamomile, lemon balm, and passionflower to help promote relaxation.

As of now, there have been no reported adverse events linked to this recall.

Parents often have mixed feelings about using herbal sleep aids for their infants. Some share positive experiences, like a parent on Reddit who said their baby found relief from gas pains after taking the product.

On the flip side, others worry about giving their babies unapproved supplements or feel guilty about relying on them for quick fixes during stressful times.

A parent expressed this sentiment, admitting to feeling bad about using a remedy as a shortcut, but acknowledging it was sometimes the only way to help their baby settle down.

As for criticism, some social media users are openly questioning the safety of sleep aids for babies, with one commenter on Instagram expressing shock at the concept.

The FDA urges consumers to stop using the product right away and recommends either returning it for a full refund or discarding it altogether.
