The Maryland Renaissance Festival has made headlines recently by prohibiting attendees from wearing fursuits for the 2026 season.
This decision came about when festival organizers updated their dress code in May, explicitly stating that fursuits are now considered a form of banned headwear, as reported by City Cast DC.
The festival’s policy categorizes fursuits alongside inappropriate face paint and frightening masks. According to the guidelines, all headwear must be removable, appropriate for a family environment, and fit the event’s theme. Anything that doesn’t align with these criteria is not allowed entry.
General Manager Julius Smith indicated that this change was influenced by customer feedback, noting that some visitors expressed discomfort around fursuit wearers at past events. He communicated this in an email, adding that patrons felt the costumes were not in keeping with the Renaissance atmosphere.

Smith elaborated that their staff has encountered situations where individuals in fursuits attempted to perform without authorization, misrepresenting themselves as part of the official cast. The festival’s guidelines prohibit guests from entertaining each other and using props that could facilitate spontaneous performances, emphasizing that the event focuses on its hired actors rather than cosplay or live-action role play.
The furry community has voiced significant displeasure regarding the ban. One individual in a Facebook group labeled the decision as discriminatory. Smith mentioned that while the festival received a mix of harsh and vulgar responses about the policy, it also garnered support from those who wish for the event to remain true to its theme.
Aston Hawthorne, a 33-year-old IT professional from Virginia who identified himself by his furry nickname, questioned the focus on fursuits in light of other costume choices seen at the festival, such as Spider-Man and Deadpool outfits. However, he acknowledged that the festival probably had its reasons and respected that they might feel justified after experiencing enough issues.
Hawthorne has decided to skip this year’s festival instead of attending without his fursuit. The event will continue each weekend until October 25.
