Wendy Sherman says escalating tensions in Middle East are ‘quite serious’

Former Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman said rising tensions between Israel and Hezbollah in the Middle East were “very serious.”

“I view the situation as very serious,” she said Sunday on NewsNation's “The Hill Sunday.”

Sherman's appearance comes amid a rise in inter-group violence in the Middle East. Last week, Israel attacked pagers belonging to Hezbollah members in Lebanon and Syria, prompting Hezbollah to respond with airstrikes.

There are fears that Israel's efforts to defeat the militant group Hamas in the Gaza Strip and attacks on Hezbollah could escalate into a larger regional war.

Sherman said Sunday that he believes Vice President Harris is better suited than former President Trump to work toward a ceasefire and a two-state solution to rebuild the Middle East.

“We need a leader who understands that the world is in a very challenging time right now, who is prepared and strategic,” she said, “and who is going to be stable and clear. The American people do not want to send their sons and daughters to war.”

Sherman said Hezbollah would not stop attacking Israel until a ceasefire was reached.

“I am really, really confident that President Harris will support Israel's right to self-defense, will advance the two-state solution, will work to expand the Abraham Accords, and will continue to work to build peace throughout the region, but the road ahead is tough,” she said.
