We’re Considering Expanding Asylum Opportunities to Deal with Influx of Venezuelan Migrants

In part of an interview with ABC News that aired on “Nightline” on Wednesday, Brendan O'Brien, the deputy envoy at the U.S. Embassy in Colombia, discussed legal issues, including potentially increasing “opportunities for asylum in the United States.” He talked about increasing the means. It is one of the solutions to the influx of Venezuelan migrants being discussed by the Biden administration.

O'Brien said, “You have to give credit to countries like Colombia. They have granted Temporary Protected Status to over 2.5 million Venezuelans. They are providing medical care. provides education. So this is part of the solution, is to integrate immigrants into these countries across Latin America. This is a regional approach and we support it. need to do it.”

He then played a clip in which ABC News correspondent Matt Rivers asked, “What do you think is missing from the conversation in the United States talking about de-escalating the border crisis?”

O'Brien said: “We're looking at expanding legal avenues, whether it's work visas or asylum opportunities in the United States. I think it's very important to understand that foreign investment in these countries is really paying off, because it's much cheaper to deal with this problem in these countries than it is to deal with it individually. It’s the U.S. border.”
