We're Open to an Agreement So Democrats Cease Using 'Jim Crow Relic' Regarding the Shutdown Blamed on the GOP

Government Shutdown Discussions

During Friday’s episode of CNN’s “The Arena,” House Minority Leader Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) placed the blame for the government shutdown squarely on Republicans. He urged Democrats to back a partisan Republican spending bill that he claims undermines healthcare for Americans. Jeffries stated, “We’re open to discussions with Republicans at any time and place, whether in the White House or Congress, to resolve this issue and get the government running again.” He advocated for a bipartisan approach to the spending deal and suggested ending the use of the “Jim Crow relic” known as the filibuster.

Host Boris Sanchez pointed out that Jeffries argues Democrats are, in a sense, holding SNAP beneficiaries hostage by not approving a continuing resolution (CR) they had previously supported just months ago. This raises questions about the future because the emergency fund, which currently stands at around $6 billion, won’t meet the projected $9 billion needed for November’s SNAP benefits. Consequently, more programs and agencies might face underfunding. So what’s the next move?

Jeffries responded, saying, “Donald Trump is in the White House, and the Republicans control both the House and the Senate. Since the beginning of this year, they’ve pursued extreme right-wing policies, forcing them upon the American public. Yet, they’re acting powerless now. The American people won’t accept that. As Democrats, we’re asking, Republicans who? It’s important to bring our teams together.” He emphasized the urgency to address the Republican-led healthcare crisis, particularly concerning the expiration of Affordable Care Act tax credits, as part of efforts to reach a bipartisan spending agreement that would reopen the government and improve living conditions for Americans, especially with rising living costs.

Jeffries also recalled Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.)’s comments from a few weeks prior, noting that despite widespread acknowledgment of the need to reopen the government, Republicans are opting to keep it shut down. He criticized them for calling on Democrats to support a partisan spending bill that he believes further dismantles healthcare protections, especially after significant cuts to Medicaid, hospitals, nursing homes, and community health centers have already been implemented. The ramifications of Republican policies are being felt across the nation, particularly regarding the refusal to extend Affordable Care Act tax credits. He added that while Senate Republicans have a say on filibuster rules, those rules are, effectively, an outdated relic of Jim Crow.
