New rules introduced by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have caused something disturbing online to ensure that voters saw all the films in categories before they voted.
A number of measures were announced by the Oscar governing body on Monday, including a provision that “academy members must watch all nominated films in each category to be eligible to vote in the final round of Oscars.”
“This is still very insane,” one person wrote on X. This resonated with many others who questioned the validity of the previous academy decision and theorized as to why the important title was praised or why it was snabbed.
“You’re saying that people can just watch one movie and be like, ‘Yeah, it should win every award,'” asked another X-commentator.
“Did they not do that before?” one user added:
Anonymous Oscar voters have previously admitted not to look at all candidates in categories before voting in the final round.
“I’m angry because I haven’t seen the substance or I’m still here,” said the person. Entertainment Weekly It’s ahead of the latest ceremony. “The first dunes, I couldn’t get through. I’m not in a hurry to go through the dunes for another three hours. I still have time to reevaluate it, but I really struggled.”
In this case, voters are expected to abstain from that category, but this is unenforceable and can last for category errors and ignorance.
Other leaked votes earlier this year suggested widespread misconceptions among voters that Ralph Fiennes had already won an Oscar in 1994 due to Schindler’s list. In fact, he never won and lost to Adrian Brody this year for the brutal.
Other changes to the award included an update to the international feature film category, including “filmmakers with refugee or asylum status,” and a clarification that the use of generator AI in films “doesn’t help or harm.”
Two of the leading candidates of the year, the brutal candidate and Emilia Perez, were involved in minor controversies over the use of AI to enhance the voices of key actors.
Monday’s statement also provided details on how to determine the first casting award. The comparable award was first introduced in 2020 at BAFTAS.
In response to the #Baffatassowhite controversy, forced viewing was enacted by the British Academy in the same year as part of a fundamental overhaul of rules and regulations.
The strict regulations are effective to ensure that voters not only watch all movies in the category they vote for, but also watch 15 randomized films that take part in the first phase of the vote. Like the inclusiveness criteria needed to be included in many important categories, such as strict gender assignments effective on the Director Longlist and outstanding British films, this measure is to promote the spread of more diverse candidates.
Talking to the Guardian in 2018, ahead of Oscar’s victory with her favorites, Olivia Colman said she would always refrain from voting if she doesn’t consider all the films.
The alternative is “I feel very naughty. I think maybe I’m really square,” she said. Colman continued to attribute her reaction to the fate of Paddy Concisin’s 2011 film Tyrannosaurusshe starred, and it was ignored by Bakhta in the best film nominations: “Like no one saw it, and it broke my heart a little.”
The Oscars’ preliminary voting for next year begins in December, and the announcement that was nominated on January 22 ahead of the March 15th ceremony is a very long campaign period. This year’s host, Conan O’Brien, will be returning as a host.
