Attorney General Patrick Morrissey (Republican, West Virginia) is expected to win the West Virginia gubernatorial race.
The Associated Press reported that Morrissey announced his candidacy at 7:30 p.m. ET shortly after polls closed and before vote counting began, as he thwarted his opponent, Huntington Mayor Steve Williams.
In his race, the first Senate flip of the night for Republicans, Morrissey defeated Wheeling Mayor Glenn Elliott (D) and Gov. Jim Justice (R), the next senator from the Mountain State. , West Virginia).
Morrissey received early support from former President Donald Trump in the Republican primary and has served as West Virginia's attorney general since 2013.

Morrissey spoke to Breitbart News about his plans for the Republican National Convention in an exclusive interview.
“I want to abolish the income tax. It's very important that we become more competitive and be the only state in the region with no income tax. We will do that and school choice will dramatically increase. Spread out, do it and maintain conservative values,” he said.
He also emphasized that he wants to compete more aggressively with neighboring states like Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia.
West Virginia will hold one of 11 gubernatorial races on Tuesday.
