A Memorable Fishing Experience
Imagine having a state record on your resume. That’s what angler Tyler Harmon now has after a unique fishing outing with his father, Rodney, and his young son, Walker.
Hailing from Ravenswood, West Virginia, Harmon thought it would be nice to head out for some evening fishing on the Ohio River. Initially, the goal was just for Walker to catch a small fish. But, as it turns out, fate had other plans for them.
While out in their 18-foot aluminum boat with four catfish rods set up, things took an unexpected turn. After a short time spent fishing, they suddenly found themselves in an intense struggle, thinking they might be snagged. Tyler soon realized he was in for a 20-minute fight with a blue catfish. With his father’s help and despite the challenges of submerged brush and the boat’s anchor line, they managed to get the massive fish onboard—though the struggle bent their landing net’s aluminum handle.
In the end, they brought in a 72.75-pound, 48.15-inch blue catfish, securing a new state weight record for West Virginia. Quite a catch, wouldn’t you say?
This is what river fishing can do. You head out with a cooler and low expectations, and suddenly you’re battling a monstrous fish that weighs as much as a small dog.
The Ohio River may not have the crystal-clear waters reminiscent of the Florida Keys or the pristine trout streams found in Montana. It’s a bit murky and industrial, but a record is a record. What’s even more astonishing is the fact that many dedicated trophy anglers invest heavily in high-end gear, obsessing over conditions and putting in long hours to snag fish of this size. Harmon, on the other hand, stumbled upon this incredible catch during a relaxed outing with three generations in the same boat.
So, 73 pounds of river gold … not a bad surprise for a casual fishing trip!
