Speaking on CNN about the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump on Saturday, host Dana Bash said she had witnessed a very evil form of political violence “just in the last few years alone.”
Bash said, “Well, I mean, we’re still gathering information and I think this is a time when the country, the world, is trying to understand what just happened. Speaking of President Biden, about 30 minutes ago, they’re in the fiercest race right now for the presidency, to win the presidential election in November, and he said very clearly that Trump, Donald Trump, has the right to assemble, he has the right to do so peacefully, and violence is inappropriate. That’s what he should have said. Again, the fact that he came out as soon as he got out of the church and as soon as he was in Rehoboth is significant.”
She continued, “I just want to make one point. In historical context, I’ve heard some people say this is reminiscent of the 1980s when Ronald Reagan was shot, and that’s true when you think about the highest office in the country, or someone running for the highest office in the country. But political violence has been seen in very egregious forms in recent years.”
Bash added, “Nancy Pelosi’s husband was asleep at home when someone came in with a hammer and hit him in the head. In 2016, we had 13 people killed and 13 injured, including a congressman who was holding an event for his constituents. I’m talking about Gabby Giffords. So this is obviously on a different scale and in a different time. This is a man who has been president and wants to be president again. But the concept of violence, the rhetoric, the outrage that leads people to become violent, this has been happening for a long time, it’s not something that goes back to the ’80s or the ’60s.”
