Insights on Rex Heuermann: The Gilgo Beach Case
Rex Heuermann, the alleged Gilgo Beach serial killer, has been described by those close to him as methodical and possessing a remarkable level of self-control.
The 61-year-old is believed to have committed the murders of seven sex workers while his family was away, with the crimes occurring between 1993 and 2023. Interestingly, authorities discovered the first four victims in 2010, yet Heuermann remained off the police radar for a decade. Prosecutors, however, have so far shared minimal physical evidence as they prepare for his trial.
According to his friend David Jimenez, Heuermann’s systematic nature and self-restraint allowed him to conceal his true identity from those around him. “If he did it, I’m sure he would have gotten away with it for a long time,” Jimenez remarked.
He described Heuermann as clever and detail-oriented, traits that he believes are essential in the architecture field where Heuermann worked. “I’ve never seen him lose his temper,” Jimenez added, reflecting on their friendship that began in 2006, which included shared activities like hunting and socializing.
Interestingly, Jimenez learned later about Heuermann’s numerous lawsuits, which had gone unnoticed by him earlier.
There were, however, significant missteps on Heuermann’s part that contributed to his capture. For instance, police uncovered a hard drive that had been partially wiped, indicating a calculated approach to conceal his actions.
Heuermann’s wife, Asa Ellerup, expressed disbelief at the notion of her husband being involved in such heinous acts, maintaining that she couldn’t picture him as a killer.
Jimenez noted that, despite Heuermann’s apparent planning skills, he made glaring mistakes. “I’m quite surprised at the foolishness of leaving a body so close to the road,” he said. “It feels like a lesson in serial killer 101: don’t leave bodies in plain sight.”
He also commented on how, given today’s technological capabilities, one would expect someone like Heuermann, savvy in tech, to manage his digital footprint better. “You’d think with his intelligence, he would have erased everything completely,” he mused, considering it quite a lapse in judgment.
In a separate note, a family member of one of the victims mentioned that a burner phone linked to Heuermann allegedly sent unsettling messages after their loved one went missing.
The new documentary titled “Gilgo Beach Killer: House of Secrets” is available for viewing today.
