A.J. Brown’s Struggles in Return Against Jets

A.J. Brown’s comeback to the Patriots lineup on Sunday didn’t quite unfold as anticipated. While it didn’t cost the team in their matchup against the Jets, which ended in a 26-19 win for the Patriots, Brown had a tough outing and was aware of it. He mentioned issues with his timing.

“I didn’t play well,” Brown said to the media. “I’m not sure if the timing was off. I know I can do better than what I showed today; there are no excuses. I’ll improve.”

On Sunday, Brown had a difficult time, recording three dropped passes and managing to catch only three out of ten targets for a total of 27 yards in his first match since Week 1.

“Yeah, I’m all good,” he added. “Regardless of the questions, I’ll say it again — no excuses. I matched up well with my guy and should’ve made the play. I got open on third down and should’ve made the play. Ankle or not, I need to capitalize on those chances.”

Brown hadn’t played in the previous four games due to a high ankle sprain sustained in the season opener against the Seahawks. His return was marked by several missed chances, including a deep pass from quarterback Drake Maye in the second quarter that could have led to a 61-yard touchdown.

He also couldn’t grab a late onside kick attempt by the Jets, though Patriots tight end Eli Raridon managed to recover the loose ball, helping to secure the win.

“I think he could’ve probably made a few more plays, come down with a few more plays,” Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel commented. “He’s been out for a while, and I know he wanted to perform well for the team. Unfortunately, it wasn’t his best outing; he realizes that, and we have confidence in him to make those plays.”

Drake Maye, excited to have his primary target back, believes this performance isn’t a long-term worry.

“First off, it was just great to see him back out there,” Maye shared. “It was cool to have a different vibe in the huddle. He adds a certain coolness to it. I look forward to nurturing our connection. Sure, there are probably some plays he wishes he could redo, but I told him in the locker room, ‘You don’t need to stress about it.’”

Brown has some time to improve, but not a lot. The 4-2 Patriots are set to face the Bears on Thursday, who are also looking for their fifth win of the season.
