Rodriguez on Yankees’ Path to Success
Alex Rodriguez professes, “There’s no bigger fan than me” when it comes to the Yankees. Still, following their ALDS exit, he attributed the loss to a poorly built roster. When asked what the team needs to improve to clinch their first championship since 2009, Rodriguez offered an unexpected insight.
“They need some stability,” he stated at the premiere of “ALEX vs. AROD,” an HBO film chronicling his tumultuous career. He pointed out that teams excelling in October typically have a consistent roster. “After we lost in 2004, it took us five years with the same core to finally get it right. But if you continuously change everything every year, it’s challenging to develop the continuity essential for success. Continuity is synonymous with championships.”
As the Yankees prepare for the offseason, they seem poised for a rebuilding phase, with Aaron Boone returning for his ninth season as manager and Aaron Judge still at the center of the team. Brian Cashman will also be taking on his 29th season as general manager.
Over the years, while the supporting cast around Judge has evolved, no lineup has managed to bring a championship back to New York. In the recent ALDS, the Blue Jays progressed but eventually lost to the Dodgers in a classic seven-game World Series.
Reflecting on the World Series, Rodriguez exclaimed, “We witnessed the best World Series of our lives. The level of play was unprecedented. I truly believe in the Yankees—there’s no bigger fan than me. I wish I could embrace every move they make. Yet, I’m hopeful they’ll get it right.”
He also commented on the Dodgers, who defeated the Yankees in 2024 and recently achieved back-to-back championships, calling them “a class in baseball.”
Whether the Yankees will make the necessary adjustments this offseason to compete remains uncertain.
“They’re out to distinguish themselves,” Rodriguez remarked. “They have extraordinary resources, but they’re utilizing them exceptionally well.”
