In the game, the character reveals her true identity, stating, “It took me a while to realize that I’m, in fact, their little sister… not their brother. Now their constant bullying feels even worse.”

Interestingly, the original Japanese version of the game, released in 2004, already featured Vivian as a transgender character, but the English version that same year changed this aspect of her identity, attributing bullying to her being “ugly” rather than the character’s gender identity.
The move is not unprecedented, as the company has previously hinted at gender diversity among its characters. Super Mario Bros. 2In Nintendo’s 2019 game series, Birdo, a pink dinosaur character with a big ribbon in his red hair, was once referred to as a man who “thinks he’s a girl.” Though this reference was later removed from the game, it suggests that Nintendo had been considering gender identity in its character designs for some time.
2024 remake Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door The new game takes a more celebratory approach to Vivian’s transgender identity, toning down the teasing that was present in the original game. Vivian is not the first transgender character to appear in a recent video game. In 2023, the highly popular Harry potter Video game, Hogwarts LegacyIntroducing Sirona Ryan, the first openly transgender character in the Harry Potter universe.
