Anthony Richardson is ready to become a sponge as he will compete with his new teammates, absorbing it all from former Giantz quarterback Daniel Jones.
Speaking at the start of the Colts offseason program on Tuesday, the third-year quarterback expressed excitement about working with Jones, 27, after agreeing to a one-year $14 million deal with a free agency team.
“The main thing I want to learn from him is how to navigate all the pressures, how things stay, how to stay focused, just keep shattering, and how to keep working.” Richardson saidaccording to the Colts website.
“He’s a smart guy, so I look forward to learning everything he has to offer and getting better as a team.”
If someone rides an NFL roller coaster, it’s Jones.
Jones’ tenure in New York, the Giants’ sixth overall pick in 2019, was plagued by injuries and uneven play. The team pulled out the escape hatch of Jones’ four-year, $160 million contract extension last season by allowing him to release in November after Big Blue fell 2-8.
He finished the year with the Vikings before testing water in the free agency.
Richardson, the Colts’ fourth overall pick, is trying to turn things around just two years ago following a rocky start to an NFL career.
He played just four games during his rookie season and repaired his sprain in October 2023 after undergoing shoulder surgery.
The 22-year-old Richardson opened the 2024 season as a starter, but missed time in October due to oblique damage.
The former Florida product sparked controversy a month later when he took himself out of a game with the Texans because he felt “tired.” The Colts benched him in favor of Joe Flaco, but he returned later this year.
Richardson said Tuesday that he was fired for the competition because he “brings the best from you.”
“That’s exactly how life works. You compete and get better because the person in front of you, the right, the left, or the person in front of you is trying to work better than you and get better than you. Competition, I love it.” He said.
In his final season with the Giants, Jones threw for 2,070 yards, eight touchdowns and seven interceptions, while Richardson threw for 1,814 yards, eight touchdowns and 12 interceptions in 11 games in 2024.
