What happens next in the Kamala Harris-Donald Trump face-off

At the end of her Democratic National Convention acceptance speech this week, Vice President Kamala Harris called on her supporters to “stand up and join us in this fight.”

With both major political parties’ national nominating conventions now concluded, the 2024 presidential election is entering its final stages.

Both Harris and Republican nominee Donald Trump are due to return to the campaign trail next week along with their running mates, visiting some of seven key battleground states that are likely to determine the outcome of November’s election.

This is a process that will be repeated every week until Election Day.

Harris interview?

The former president, his running mate, Sen. J.D. Vance of Ohio, and Republican allies of their campaigns have repeatedly criticized Ms. Harris for not holding a major press conference or giving interviews since replacing Mr. Biden as head of the party’s 2024 presidential campaign more than a month ago.

All eyes will now be on Harris to see whether she follows through on her promise to give interviews to national news media with just one week left in August.

Funding battle

With just one week left in August, the Trump and Harris campaigns will likely announce their latest fundraising figures at the end of the month.

President Biden led President Trump in fundraising earlier this year, but the former president saw a surge in fundraising in late spring and early summer.

But after Biden made a major push to block his reelection and Harris replaced him as the Democratic Party’s standard-bearer, fundraising for the campaign and the party soared, with Harris outraising Trump in fundraising during July.

The campaign could release its August figures as early as Sept. 1, but fundraising, along with opinion polls, is a key indicator and will be closely watched and scrutinized.

Clash of Debates

The first, and likely only, presidential debate between Harris and Trump is scheduled for September 10 in Philadelphia.

The showdown could be the most crucial night of the 2024 presidential election, potentially shifting or transforming the current margin of error contest between the vice president and the former president.

If you need evidence, look no further than Biden and Trump’s late June debate, where the president’s disastrous performance stoked questions about whether the 81-year-old president had the mental and physical stamina to survive another four years in the White House and prompted calls from within Biden’s party for him to drop out of the race.

Less than a month after the Atlanta clashes, the president dropped out of the race.

Early voting

There are 73 days until Election Day, but some voters will start casting their ballots next month.

In the battleground state of North Carolina, mail-in voting begins on September 6. Early voting in two other key battleground states, Pennsylvania, begins on September 16, and Michigan, begins on September 26.
