TNT Sports Expands College Basketball Coverage
TNT Sports is ramping up its offerings, not only bringing fans NASCAR races but also showcasing Big 12 and Mountain West games for this college football season.
For the first time, viewers can catch several Big East women’s basketball games on TNT and truTV as the new season kicks off.
The inaugural Big East women’s basketball game on TNT Sports is set for Wednesday. The reigning national champions, UConn, will face Loyola Chicago in what promises to be an exciting matchup, airing at 7:30 PM ET from Storrs, Connecticut.
Alongside the full game broadcast, TNT Sports will air a studio show featuring Candice Parker, a two-time WNBA MVP, alongside former UConn star Renee Montgomery and host Lauren Gibara. Additional commentary will come from Autumn Johnson and Christy Winters Scott.
“When perennial champions like UConn are in the mix, every team steps up to test themselves against the best,” Parker noted. “This raises the standard for the entire conference, pushing everyone to perform at a higher level.”
Last season, only two Big East teams made it to the NCAA Tournament. Historically, however, this league has earned more bids, and there’s a push to return to that status this year. Rising teams like Marquette, Seton Hall, Villanova, and Georgetown are aiming to contribute. Notably, Marquette had a complete roster retention from last season, Seton Hall topped the league’s preseason poll, and Villanova welcomes back Jasmine Bascoe from the Canadian national team. Additionally, Creighton is anticipated to be competitive as they hosted UConn last March Madness.
But it’s Georgetown that seems to have caught Parker’s attention most, alongside UConn’s star.
“Georgetown is really interesting to me. They had a mix of successes and struggles last year, but the arrival of six transfers and the return of Brianna Scott makes them a team to keep an eye on,” Parker remarked. “And then there’s players like Azi Fuad and Sarah Strong who bring their own star power.”
TNT Sports will broadcast 15 Big East games this season on either TNT or truTV, with an option to stream on HBO Max. Notably, UConn will feature in eight of those games, highlighted by talents like Strong and Fudd.
Strong, as a freshman last year, was among four players nationally to average at least 16 points, eight rebounds, and three assists per game. Meanwhile, Fudd wrapped up a season shooting 43.6 percent from three-point range, marking her as the 14th best nationally, and she was named Most Valuable Player in the Final Four.
Questions remain: Will Fudd and Strong lead the team after Paige Backers departs? Can the Big East up its game to reclaim its reputation for sending more teams to the NCAA Tournament?
Perhaps we’ll find some answers through a game aired on TNT.
“The game has changed significantly, especially in how players are recruited based on their strengths through NIL and transfer opportunities, plus the evolution of play styles,” Parker asserted. “Pace, spacing, physicality, and overall athleticism have dramatically improved, leading to a quicker, more exciting women’s game.”
