Lizzo Joins the Debate on Sydney Sweeney’s Ad Controversy
Singer Lizzo has humorously entered the discussion surrounding actress Sydney Sweeney’s denim advertisement for American Eagle, which has drawn criticism for its suggestive nature. Some have accused Sweeney of jealousy, while her fans have praised her response on social media.
Last week, Sweeney appeared in a series of alluring ads for American Eagle’s denim line, reminiscent of the iconic Brooke Shields. Additionally, she had recently been in the limelight for her June campaign with Dr. Squatch, featuring soap allegedly infused with her bathwater.
The latest ads have faced backlash not only for their overt sexualization of Sweeney but also for accusations of veiled “Nazi propaganda” and associations with “White supremacy.” The campaign’s tagline, “Sydney Sweeney has good jeans,” plays on words linking “jeans” to “genes.” Critics quickly pointed out how this could imply “great genes,” referencing her physical features—a double entendre that some claimed echoed Nazi ideals under Hitler, which emphasized a so-called “Aryan master race.”
In response to the uproar, Lizzo shared a photo of herself in a similar denim outfit, mimicking one of Sweeney’s shots. She captioned it with, “If the Democrats won the election,” and added, “My jeans are black…”
This post seemed to humorously suggest a change in cultural dynamics since Donald Trump’s second term. But there are mixed opinions about who she was targeting, especially given the backlash against her recent weight loss from certain body positivity advocates.
The comments section of her Instagram post reflected this division, with one user stating, “My jeans are Black. My genes built this country. My jeans are made from the same cotton this country was built on,” while another expressed, “Thank God that Trump won.”
