Holocaust Survivor Reacts to Boulder Attack

A Holocaust survivor, 88-year-old Barbara Steinmetz, expressed her distress over a recent terrorist incident in Boulder, Colorado. She reflected on the troubling state of the country, asking, “What’s going on in our country?” after she and a group had been advocating for the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas when the attack occurred.

Steinmetz conveyed a message of hope, stating, “We’re Americans. We’re better than this,” emphasizing the kindness of people in the nation. Despite her warm sentiments, she appeared visibly shaken following an assault by a man armed with a makeshift flame weapon.

“It’s about what the heck is going on in our country,” she remarked, clearly unsettled.

The suspect, Muhammad Sabri Soliman, an undocumented immigrant, has been charged with attempted murder and hate crimes. Authorities allege he used a flamethrower to target Jewish individuals and supporters of Israel during the assault.

After the incident, former President Donald Trump condemned the act, labeling it “unacceptable” in the U.S. He criticized the current administration’s immigration policies, suggesting they contributed to such violence. “This is another example of why we must keep our borders safe,” he stated.

In a related comment, Secretary of State Marco Rubio assured that under Trump’s administration, terrorists and sympathizers would face consequences, including visa cancellations and deportations.

On Tuesday, U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Christie Noem announced that the spouse and children of the suspect were in custody, raising concerns about immigration enforcement.

This recent violence follows a surge of anti-Semitic sentiments, especially in light of attacks against Israel and the ongoing conflict with Hamas. Both the Boulder incident and other related acts have highlighted rising tensions and calls for awareness and action.
