Cracker Barrel Reverses Logo Change After Backlash
There’s been quite a stir with Cracker Barrel lately, particularly regarding its recent attempts to refresh its branding. The company’s CEO, Julie Fels Masino, who took the reins in July 2023, found herself under significant scrutiny following the decision to change the logo. This move faced immediate backlash, and it led to calls for her removal from the company.
Masino’s compensation package is noteworthy, with a base salary of $1 million for 2024, not to mention additional bonuses tied to performance metrics. However, Cracker Barrel has had a rocky few years. Their stock has plummeted by around 55% over the past five years, even with a 52% uptick last year. So, it’s a bit perplexing why they thought a rebrand would be effective.
In a way, it’s almost amusing—like a comedy sketch—when you think about how conservative voices have declared victory over the decision to ditch the new logos. Critics included Sardar Biglari, CEO of Steak’n Shake, who happens to be a major investor in Cracker Barrel. He was quite vocal about the rebranding, labeling it “obvious stupidity” and claimed his ideas were dismissed.
Following the flood of public discontent, Cracker Barrel made it clear on Tuesday that they would abandon the rebranding effort. The company announced on social media that they would retain the “old timer” logo, thanking customers for their feedback. It’s as if they realized that nostalgia, in a sense, resonates more with their patrons.
In their statement, the company emphasized their commitment to offering a warm, family-like atmosphere alongside their food. It’s kind of interesting how quickly the tide can turn when customers speak up. The logo, which was supposed to represent a new era, is now officially out, and frankly, I think many would agree it’s a victory for tradition over change.
