What is the schedule for your Social Security payment in September 2025?

Social Security Turns 90: Upcoming Payment Details

As Social Security reaches its 90th anniversary, there’s an important financial deadline looming for Congress. Currently, the program is facing a cash flow issue—it’s been paying out more than it’s collecting through payroll taxes.

For those receiving Social Security Retirement Benefits, checks and direct deposits will be disbursed according to the usual schedule set by the Social Security Administration. So, you can expect monthly payments to go out in September 2025, just like they typically do.

However, it’s worth noting that there’s some confusion regarding the Supplementary Security Income (SSI) payments. Recipients of SSI won’t receive their payments in September. While SSI and Social Security are distinct programs, it’s essential to recognize that about half of those on SSI also receive Social Security benefits.

Social Security Retirement Payments for September 2025

If you’re a recipient of Regular Social Security Benefits (not SSI), your payment will arrive on specific dates based on your date of birth and when you first started collecting benefits:

  • Wednesday, September 3rd: For those who began receiving benefits by May 1997.
  • Wednesday, September 10th: If your birthday falls between the 1st and 10th.
  • Wednesday, September 17th: For birthdays from the 11th to 20th.
  • Wednesday, September 24th: If your birthday is between the 21st and 31st.

You can find the complete 2025 payment calendar on the official SSA website.

Why Some May Not Receive Payments in September

Only those receiving SSI benefits won’t have regular payment dates this month, as the first of the month falls on Labor Day. Consequently, their September payment has been issued earlier, specifically on Friday, August 29th.

This is consistent with standard SSA policy: if the first of the month occurs on weekends or federal holidays, SSI payments are made the previous business day.
