Madonna, who is nearly 68, is set to claim the No. 1 album on Billboard this week, surpassing Gen Z stars Olivia Rodrigo and Ella Langley by quite a margin.
In her latest work, “Confessions on a Dancefloor Part II,” she delves into personal themes. The lyrics are thought to reference her late brother, stepmother, and ex-husband Sean Penn, whom she hints at having “blackmailed” her.
A friend of Madonna’s shared with Page Six that learning about the situation was unexpected; however, it’s noted that Sean remains “the love of her life.”
Regarding her daughter, Lourdes Leon, a friend mentioned, “There was a moment when Madonna and Lola didn’t speak. Laura always felt that Madonna was rather tough on her as a child, perhaps more than necessary.”
Madonna has expressed that she reached out to her daughter to collaborate on songwriting in hopes of mending their relationship, including doing duets and co-writing songs.
The same friend reaffirmed that there were indeed times of silence between them, with Laura feeling her mother was too strict during her upbringing.
Meanwhile, Madonna also carries guilt about raising Laura in such a high-profile world and recognizes how it has shaped her identity.
In one of her songs, she affectionately refers to her daughter as “Little Star,” a nickname she used in her 1998 album Ray of Light when Laura was just a toddler.
She sings: “You didn’t ask for all the flashing lights. I didn’t consider how confusing it would be or how it would hurt. I wish I had thought of the pain I caused.”
Madonna and Laura collaborated on the song “The Test,” as a means to heal their relationship.
A source indicated that as they worked together, nostalgia emerged for Madonna, prompting some of her most heartfelt lyrics. It’s also said that she feels that a child of someone so well-known might feel lost in their identity, which adds to her sense of guilt.
Laura, born to Madonna and fitness trainer Carlos Leon, experienced a strict upbringing, where sweets and certain foods were off-limits, reflecting Madonna’s desire to prevent her children from falling into a typical, more careless celebrity lifestyle. Reports have noted that Laura didn’t get her first iPhone until she turned 15 and that she faced repercussions for leaving clothes on the floor.
Laura has previously called her mother a “control freak” and cited that she desired independence from her mother immediately after graduating high school.
Growing up between London and Manhattan, Laura graduated from LaGuardia High School, dated Timothée Chalamet pre-fame, and now lives in Bushwick, Brooklyn as she pursues her music career. Recently, she dated photographer Jonathan Puglia but is currently single.
Under the name Lola Hole, she released a few singles in the past couple of years but has not been active recently.
Madonna’s reflective songwriting seems to stem from her recent life experiences, including a health scare that had her in a coma due to a bacterial infection.
Additionally, she has been working on a script about her life, which faced setbacks due to budget issues with Universal Pictures. She’s expressed the significance of her past in her creative work, stating that it’s not something she clings to but rather something she learns from.
Her recent songs touch on themes related to family, including her brother Christopher, who passed away in 2024, and her late stepmother Joanne. She conveys feelings of loss and complexity regarding familial love and connections in her lyrics.
Madonna’s relationship with Sean Penn, which was tumultuous during their marriage from 1985 to 1989, is also explored in her new music. Friends suggest that despite their history, she still sees him as a significant figure in her life.
Presently, Madonna is dating Hakeem Morris, 30, a soccer player, although they aren’t considering marriage anytime soon.
Living primarily in London nowadays, she enjoys being closer to her son Rocco, especially after a challenging custody battle years ago that she openly reflected on as a painful experience.
Despite the tension, Rocco seems to understand his mother’s intentions, and friends believe that she has genuinely aimed for what’s best for her children.
Looking ahead, Madonna is reportedly planning a concert tour, but her family is concerned about how demanding it might be on her health, given her past experiences of overexerting herself during performances.
As she navigates these challenges, she remains determined to maintain her place at the top of the music industry, presenting her life as a narrative of survival against the odds.
