What motivated CEO shooting suspect? Here's what to know

Luigi Mangione, the suspect in the shooting death of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson, was arrested Monday morning after the search for the killer behind the healthcare executive's death excited the nation for several days.

Mangione was arrested in Pennsylvania and charged with five crimes, including forgery and possession of an unlicensed firearm, according to a criminal complaint. He also currently faces murder charges in New York City, where the shooting occurred.

Questions swirl about what Mangione's motives were.

Here's what you need to know about the potential motive of the suspect in the Thompson shooting.

memo

“I was expecting these parasites,” Mangione wrote in the note, according to law enforcement officials who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

“Dear Fed, I will keep this brief because I respect the work that the Fed does for our country.”According to the Associated Press, to avoid a lengthy investigation, I will I want to make it clear that I am not cooperating with any of the parties involved,” Mangione said in the memo.

“I apologize for the conflict and the trauma, but it was what had to be done. Frankly, these parasites were just expecting it,” he later added, the Associated Press reported.

Reported memos suggest that Mr. Mangione may have considered Mr. Thompson to fit that description.

NYPD Chief of Detectives Joe Kenney said Mangione wrote a three-page document expressing “certain malice towards corporate America.”

shell casing

Police recovered three live 9mm rounds from the shooting scene. According to NBC News, a New York City law enforcement official said the shells were engraved with the words “deny,” “defense,” and “banish.”

The New York Post later reported that the words reflected the book's title, “Delay, Deny, Defend: Why Insurance Companies Don't Pay Claims and What You Can Do About It.”

shout to medibe

Mangione shouted to reporters outside the Pennsylvania courthouse on Tuesday as officers were transporting him inside for extradition proceedings. As officers gathered around him and ushered him to the door, he could be heard saying his words were “absolutely outrageous” and “an insult to the intelligence of the American people.”
