Richard Gere’s New Life in Spain
Richard Gere, now 76, found a new chapter in his life after moving from Connecticut to Spain last year. He lives there with his wife, Alejandra Silva, and their children.
Despite loving his new home, Gere admits he misses the “energy” of New York City. He remarked that living there can be quite “addictive.”
Even with the longing for the lively streets of the Big Apple, Gere is delighted about their home on the other side of the ocean. He expressed, “My wife is very happy in Spain, and that’s the best thing. She’s surrounded by great family and friends.”
Gere appreciates the warmth of Spanish culture, describing it as joyful and less stressful compared to the U.S. He said, “Spaniards are very warm, very open.”
The actor also enjoys the local cuisine. He noted, “It’s a very happy place. It’s similar to Italy, where you’re embraced by a Latin culture that has a different outlook on life.”
Gere and Silva, who met in 2014, share two sons, Alexander, 6, and James, 5. Gere also has a 25-year-old son, Homer, from his previous marriage. Silva has an 11-year-old son, Albert, from an earlier marriage.
Earlier this year, Gere shared a glimpse into their life and happiness in Spain, saying, “We are happier than ever.” He believes that their joy is tied to their life there: “Because she’s at home, I’m happy, because if she’s happy, I’m happy.”
During a joint interview, both discussed their deep connection, with Silva mentioning, “We were tied together by karma from our previous lives.”
They also reflected on how they’ve adapted to daily life in Spain following the sale of their $10.75 million mansion in Connecticut. Silva praised Gere’s dedication as a father, stating, “He loves reading stories to the kids. It looks like an idyllic picture, but it’s true. He’s a great father.” She added humorously, “He doesn’t cook. I cook, but when I do, he plays the guitar.”
Moreover, both Gere and Silva are committed to humanitarian efforts in their new home. Silva explained, “The only reason we’re here in Madrid is to be on the board of an NGO. We want to help end homelessness in this country,” aiming for a future where no one sleeps on the streets.
Reflecting on teachings from the 14th Dalai Lama, Gere shared advice to “be kind whenever you can. And it’s always possible.”
When Gere talked about the move last year, he mentioned his wife’s influence, saying, “My wife is Spanish and she gave me about seven years here, so I’m going to spend a few years in Madrid. Our children are bilingual, so they will thrive there.”
