House of the Dragon Season 1 revealed how childhood best friends Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma Darcy) and Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke) unwittingly became leaders of opposing factions of House Targaryen: the Black and the Green. The Greens believe that Alicent Hightower’s son Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney) should be king simply because he is his father’s eldest heir. Never mind the fact that he is a bit of a selfish idiot who tried to evade the throne. Meanwhile, the Blacks adhere to the proclamation of the late King Viserys (Paddy Considine) that his eldest daughter, Rhaenyra, should inherit the Iron Throne. Working against Rhaenyra are sexism and scandals. She casually gave birth to three illegitimate children from her first marriage, believing it would not be a problem.
