Dion Sanders Begins Third Season as Colorado Coach

Dion Sanders is entering his third year as head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes, marking a notable change since his sons, Chedur and Shiro, are no longer on the team.

In a recent segment on ESPN’s “First Take,” sports commentator Stephen A. Smith expressed curiosity about Sanders possibly considering a move to a Southeastern Conference (SEC) school. He specifically questioned the possibility of Sanders taking over coaching duties for Alabama, succeeding Karen DeBoer.

Alabama, a top contender in college football over the last decade, surprisingly didn’t reach the playoffs last year following Nick Saban’s retirement. In 2023, they fell to the Michigan Wolverines in the Rose Bowl, with Michigan ultimately winning the national championship.

Smith shared his thoughts, pondering, “What if he coached Alabama instead of DeBoer? What if he had access to the funding at Texas A&M? Those alumni have deep pockets. And, yeah, I’ve heard Florida might want him too.”

He went on to say he wasn’t impressed with Alabama’s performance last season, mentioning a sort of gentler style of play. In his view, Sanders would bring a much-needed toughness if he were to join the Crimson Tide.

“If Alabama were to switch gears and bring in someone like ‘Prime Time,’ it could have been something special,” Smith stated.

DeBoer faces significant pressure, especially since he’s stepping into Saban’s shoes. The No. 8 team is set to face Florida State for the season opener on August 30th.

Interestingly, Sanders was once a strong candidate for the head coaching position with the Dallas Cowboys, but the negotiations didn’t pan out.

For now, Sanders seems focused on his health and the upcoming season, clearly expressing a desire to remain at Colorado.
