Canadian psychologist and author Jordan Peterson is facing serious health challenges due to a neurological issue, along with experiencing symptoms of akathisia, as explained by his daughter, Mikhaila Peterson, in a recent social media update.
In a video shared on X, Mikhaila revealed that the family has learned Peterson, who is 63, is dealing with a “psych med-induced neurological injury.” She mentioned that his symptoms have continued even after being off psychiatric medications for six years.
Mikhaila elaborated that his health deteriorated last summer, possibly due to mold exposure and stress, which was further complicated by pneumonia and ensuing sepsis.
Health Complications and Ongoing Struggles
According to her, the last year has been particularly tough, with Peterson suffering from severe symptoms of akathisia—a condition characterized by an inability to stay still and inner restlessness.
The Cleveland Clinic describes akathisia as a frequently underdiagnosed side effect of certain psychiatric medications, especially antipsychotics.
Mikhaila asserted that neurological injuries stemming from psych medications are more prevalent than many realize and that there are often misdiagnoses involved. Treatment options can be difficult to navigate, adding to the overall challenge.
“Neurological injuries from psych meds are far more common than people are aware of. I created this video to explain them and akathisia because they don’t get enough discussion, are frequently misdiagnosed, and are difficult to treat,” she stated.
She mentioned that the family is going through a “devastating” experience and indicated that she won’t be sharing further updates for the time being, emphasizing that it causes stress for her family and herself. “I don’t plan on making another update about my dad; it stresses my family out and there’s nothing more to say until things improve,” she wrote.
Mikhaila also talked about the difficulties of managing her father’s symptoms and expressed her frustration with online speculation surrounding his care. “Not only are we coping with missing my dad, but I’m also managing my own pregnancy, taking care of him, and feeling really sad. Plus, we have to deal with ridiculous comments online,” she noted.
She concluded her message with, “Prayers are appreciated still.”
Jordan Peterson’s Hospitalization Last Year
In December 2025, Mikhaila requested prayers regarding her father’s health on Instagram after he was diagnosed with chronic inflammatory response syndrome (CIRS). She stated, “He’s still not doing well, but he’s not as badly as he was. Prayers are still much appreciated.”
She also shared that, while he is under the care of a highly skilled medical team, the family still remains uncertain about the specifics of his health situation.
Back in August 2025, she announced that Peterson would be pausing public appearances to focus on his treatment. Later, it was reported that he spent nearly a month in critical care and was isolated from his family during that time.
