New Footage Reveals Response to Titan Submersible Incident
Recently released footage from a BBC documentary showcases the immediate reaction of Wendy Rush, the wife of Oceangate CEO Stockton Rush, following the tragic implosion of the Titan submersible in June 2023.
In the documentary titled *Improvision: The Titanic Sub Disaster*, Wendy can be seen at a computer that facilitates communication with the submersible. After an explosion, she asks, “What was that bang?” This moment captures the initial confusion surrounding the incident.
Just before the explosion, Wendy received a message indicating that the sub had “dropped two weights” and was progressing as planned. However, U.S. Coast Guard members reviewing the footage noted that the sound signaled a catastrophic failure. The BBC reported that the message about the weights was sent prior to the implosion, and there was a delay in reaching the support vessel.
The explosion claimed the lives of Stockton Rush, as well as passengers Hamish Harding, Paul Henri Narjore, Shazada Dod, and his son, Suleman.
A survey by the U.S. Coast Guard revealed that the carbon fiber structure of the Titan began to show signs of deterioration during earlier trips. Experts have pointed out that carbon fiber is not suited for the extreme conditions of deep-sea exploration.
In the aftermath of the incident, Oceangate halted all exploration and commercial operations. Reports indicated that several planned dives were canceled as experts raised concerns about safety risks.
The BBC documentary is part of a broader presentation, which also includes a Netflix film titled *Titan: The Oceangate Disaster*.
