WhatsApp Stands Firm on Ads Amid User Concerns

WhatsApp, which supports over 2.8 billion users monthly, has reaffirmed its decision not to handle advertising directly, despite some backlash from its extensive user base.

This announcement comes after several contentious updates, like the introduction of AI buttons, which many users viewed as an overt advertising push seen on other platforms.

In 2023, speculation arose about apps starting to feature personalized ads, but WhatsApp’s head, Cathcart, quickly dismissed these rumors through a straightforward tweet.

Meta, WhatsApp’s parent company, has outlined how advertising will fit into its overall strategy for its apps. Ads will only appear in the Updates tab, where users can add new statuses and engage with channels.

According to Meta, the Updates tab has over 1.5 billion daily users.

In a recent blog post, the company indicated that the new policy is aimed at aiding channel administrators, organizations, and businesses in expanding by introducing advertising within channel subscriptions and status updates.

WhatsApp historically earned praise for its security, reliability, and being free for users globally. However, with this shift towards advertising, some of its loyal user base might feel that the focus is now shifting away from what made WhatsApp appealing.

Meta has stated that users who haven’t linked their WhatsApp to other Meta accounts will just use app-specific data. This includes how users engage with ads, considering aspects like location, language, and interactions with various channels.

The company insisted, “We will never sell or share your phone number to advertisers,” and assured users that personal messages and calls won’t be used to target ads.

End-to-end encryption is still part of the service, with Meta claiming that if users only call contacts or send messages, nothing will change. Yet, for many, that reassurance feels insufficient.

Concerns are palpable online. One user on Reddit expressed frustration and shared that this news has prompted a larger discussion.

“I’m really tired of this,” one commenter lamented about the increasing prevalence of ads online, while another suggested, “WhatsApp has been officially ruined.”

One enthusiastic observer remarked, “Yeah, this is why Meta’s ads promised never to intrude on your messages—claiming your conversations are 100% private, prooooomise.”

A cynical commenter even predicted, “Just wait for ad-free WhatsApp Premium for $5 a month.”

Conversely, some users in the discussion weren’t particularly bothered: “No one is using it [the Updates tab] anyway.”

As ads roll out in the coming months, many WhatsApp users are already expressing concerns about potential changes to their experience. Some are even considering switching to more secure messaging apps like Telegram and Signal.

One Redditor simply stated, “This will be enough for me to find another messaging app.”
