Sony Pictures Television Studios has let go of Jim Thornton from his role on “Wheel of Fortune.” A spokesperson confirmed on Friday that his termination was effective immediately following a comprehensive investigation.
This decision comes after Thornton was suspended from the game show earlier this week, which raised eyebrows among fans and critics alike. The spokesperson had previously mentioned on September 1 that they were looking into some allegations regarding Thornton while he was suspended. However, they did not specify what those allegations entailed.
Thornton has been the show’s announcer since 2011, stepping in after the passing of Charlie O’Donnell the previous year.
Reports suggest that the alleged incident connected to Thornton happened during an American Airlines flight he took in May. According to accounts, another passenger reported issues concerning his behavior, leading to law enforcement waiting for him at the gate upon arrival.
American Airlines later confirmed that authorities were indeed present due to customer concerns on Flight 1276 arriving at Los Angeles International Airport on May 14. It’s important to note, however, that Thornton was not arrested during this incident.
In a recent statement regarding the allegations, Thornton’s attorney emphasized that he “did not engage in any illegal conduct” and explained that law enforcement spoke to him for just a few minutes before determining that no wrongdoing had occurred. They reportedly advised him that he was free to go.
Thornton is currently being replaced on “Wheel of Fortune,” and it seems like there will be some significant changes in the very near future as the show finds a new voice.
