Mandatory EV? Not so fast.
Last week, the house passed a resolution to reject The Biden administration's rules impose tough new emissions standards on U.S. automakers. This rule will go into effect starting with 2027 model year vehicles.
As we await a vote on the resolution in the Senate, we thought we'd share five obstacles to an all-electric future.
1. Cost
These vehicles tend to be expensive. We're not just talking about sticker price. Insurance and maintenance costs are also generally higher. This is a major pain point for many American consumers.
2. Inconvenience
Until charging stations become as plentiful as gas pumps, many consumers will stick with what they know. Finding a charging station needs to become easier and more convenient, especially for people who don't have a charger at home.
3. China
Our biggest rival is going all-in on cheap EVs made just across the border in Mexico. If North America's trade rules can be leveraged, low-cost EV options could flood the market. this is, “Extinction level event” For the American auto industry.
4. Consumer Choice
Consumers, especially American consumers, don't like being told what to buy. Do you want people to want EVs? First, please correct 1 and 2 above. Even if they do, some will still want an internal combustion engine. That should be fine.
5. Hybrid
Who would want an EV when you can also get a hybrid? The phrase “best of both worlds” comes to mind. Or maybe this is a new idea. Why not choose between an EV, an internal combustion engine vehicle, or a hybrid vehicle? Sounds like a win-win-win to me.
Is it “Como”?
In other news, I've been to Italy, where EVs more often refer to “extra virgin” olive oil than electric cars.
I had the pleasure of test driving the 2024 Alfa Romeo Giulia Veloce from Milan to Lake Como. Not only is this drive incredibly scenic, but it's also the perfect way to put the Giulia through its paces, taking full advantage of the Giulia's nimble handling on narrow roads and hairpin bends.
Giulia is also beautiful, with the beautiful Northern Italian countryside serving as the perfect backdrop.
Watch my video below for my full report on this trip and how Julia coped with it.
