When it’s on, how to watch, speaker schedule

Milwaukee — Thousands of Republicans are set to gather in Wisconsin on Monday to kick off the Republican National Convention, just two days after former President Donald Trump was nearly assassinated at a rally in Pennsylvania.

Undeterred by the nearly deadly attack, the 78-year-old Trump is set to attend the Republican Party’s first major in-person national convention since 2016, where he is due to accept the presidential nomination and announce his running mate.

“In light of the terrible events that occurred yesterday, I was planning on postponing my trip to Wisconsin.” Trump wrote in Truth Social Sunday.“However, I have decided that I cannot allow a ‘gun slayer’ or potential assassin to force schedule or other changes.”

Already heightened security concerns will be magnified with key political leaders and public figures speaking at the Fiserv Forum.

The Post has teams of reporters and photographers on the ground bringing you real-time news as it happens.

Here’s what else you need to know about the four-day tournament.

What is the Republican National Convention?

Every four years, the Republican Party holds a major convention where 2,400 delegates formally nominate the party’s leader for president.

The process brings together key party figures and current leaders to discuss strategy, policies etc. Party conventions are sometimes held in states where the party is looking to gain traction.

Wisconsin is widely seen as one of the top seven states in recent presidential election cycles – Biden won the state in 2020, but Trump carried it in 2016.

In the roll call process, states come together in alphabetical order to announce how many delegates they will allocate to each candidate.

By the end of the campaign, Trump had won about 2,243 delegates, well above the 1,125 needed to win the nomination, making him the party’s front-runner.

Additionally, the Republican Party is expected to formally adopt a new policy platform, released last week in a historically thin 16-page document.

This convention will be significantly different from the 2020 Republican Convention, which was scaled back and held partly in Charlotte, North Carolina, partly in Washington, D.C., and partly in a variety of remote locations because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Where can I watch it? Is it the R.N.C.?

All major news networks will broadcast the convention sessions, including Fox News, CNN, MSNBC, NBC and C-SPAN.

The Republican Party’s official website will also provide a live stream of the convention, which will also be available on YouTube, Facebook and Twitter.

When will President Trump announce his vice president?

President Trump is expected to announce his running mate at the party convention, but there has been no public confirmation as to when that will happen.

Proposed changes to the Republican National Convention rules could allow Trump, if he wishes, to wait to announce his as-yet-unnamed No. 2 until just before delegates formally submit their nominations on Wednesday.

whato Would you like to attend?

With Haley and DeSantis expected to attend, there are few surprises on the absentee side.

Perhaps the most glaring absence from the list of main players is former Vice President Mike Pence, who served in Trump’s first administration and ran again alongside Trump as the Republican candidate in 2020, but has announced he will not endorse his former vice presidential candidate in the 2024 presidential election.

One notable confirmed absentee is former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, whose Senate bid was surprisingly competitive in the heavily Democratic state and expanded his 2024 district map to Republicans.

His team told The Washington Post that he will not be attending.

Republican senators who have clashed with Trump in the past, such as Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah), Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), and Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine), are also expected to be absent.
