Grain Market Update
On Wednesday morning, the grain market is experiencing increased pressure, particularly with livestock and cattle prices reaching new heights.
Current Market Conditions
Darin Newsom, a senior market analyst, notes that grain prices are facing selling pressure from non-commercial entities. He suggests that corn is once again nearing its lower contract levels. The overall sentiment in the market is becoming more stable as we head into this marketing year, reflected in a weaker base level.
Corn crop ratings are impressively high, leading to expectations of larger yields.
Demand Challenges
However, Newsom highlights a concerning trend: demand appears to be decreasing. Since November 1st, corn exports have totaled 400 million bushels, but this is notably lagging behind the usual pace. Conversely, soybean shipments have surpassed 200 million bushels since late October, which is above average.
He mentions that the timing coincides with uncertainties around the 2024 election and ongoing tariff concerns. If export customers are to avoid elevated prices from tariffs, a robust export pace in November may be crucial.
Interestingly, the U.S. is not selling any new crop soybeans to China. Instead, Brazil’s market share has surged by 56% due to significant purchases from Beijing.
Trade Outlook
According to Newsom, expectations for improved demand from trade deals are diminishing. The transactions noted up to this point are more frameworks than actual trades, contributing to a generalized lack of confidence in the demand for U.S. crops.
Commercial Stock Holdings
The latest USDA Quarterly Grain Strains report shows that older crop bushels are now predominantly in commercial hands this year.
Market Bearishness
Newsom believes there’s little motivation for fund traders to alter their positions, as they are heavily short on corn with over 200,000 contracts. He suggests that favorable weather conditions and record-breaking production in South America for both corn and soybeans are further pressuring grain futures.
