Lobster Roll Favorites from Long Island Chefs
When it comes to lobster rolls, opinions can vary widely. Some places shine, while others… not so much.
Chef Eric Levine from 317 Main in Farmingdale shared his thoughts: “Some spots on the island do an amazing job, and then there are some that really miss the mark.”
He pointed out that overcooking or drowning the lobster in mayonnaise and lemon can ruin the experience. “Once you find a good lobster roll, you just keep going back,” he added.
The guide to the island’s lobster roll scene features a diverse range of spots, including some established favorites and newer contenders like Jackson Hole in East Islip, which has gained popularity thanks to social media.

Chef Mike Landesberg offers eight different styles of lobster rolls, which has become quite the attraction on Instagram. “We use about 5,000 to 6,000 pounds of lobster every week,” he mentioned, adding that he aims to support other local businesses.
Known as the “Crazy Lobster Roll Guy,” his lobster roll topped with Cajun honey butter, jalapeño, and “secret spices” has caught fire online. “Sales have doubled,” he bragged about his menu item that includes knuckles, claws, and tails.
“For us, this has turned into a tourist destination,” Landesberg remarked.
Ironically, when Landesberg takes a break from his kitchen, he often heads to Levine’s restaurant.

Levine’s establishment, located in central Nassau County, is something Landesberg refers to as “the best-kept secret for lobster rolls on Long Island.”
“The meat is always fresh—claws, knuckles, tails—just perfectly cooked. When I had one last week, it melted in my mouth,” Landesberg recalled.
Levine takes pride in keeping his lobster roll simple yet delicious. “We keep it basic with salt, pepper, lemon, a little zest, and mayonnaise. That’s all you need,” he said.
Inspired by his love for seafood, he’s even created a 3-foot-long lobster roll that has quickly become a crowd-pleaser.
“It’s a hot topic,” Levine noted, explaining that the visual appeal draws attention. “If people see it on your table, they’ll want to try it too… It makes us stand out.”
If Levine is looking for a place beyond his restaurant, he heads just west to Popei’s Clam Bar.

Levine commended owner Joe Reale for achieving a balance of simplicity and flavor with his offerings.
“The flavors are spot on, and everything is done just right,” he praised.
Reale serves both hot and cold lobster rolls paired with a side of Cajun waffle fries, stating, “Just throw it on a soft roll, toast it, and you’re good to go. It’s fantastic.”
When he seeks a break from his own restaurant, Reale makes his way to Lobster Roll in Amagansett.

Famed for its neon “lunch” sign, the restaurant, established in 1977, is known worldwide. Reale asserted that a trip to Montauk and the Hamptons is incomplete without visiting.
According to the owners, the eatery’s longstanding success is rooted in its focus on high-quality lobster and unpretentious customer service.
“It’s all about the lobster… Cold Water Lobster,” remarked Andrea Anthony, a co-owner who has been working in the business since her childhood. “Our recipe hasn’t changed. We keep it simple because the lobster speaks for itself.”
Still, she admitted it’s tough to hold onto that classic formula with a half-century-old recipe.
“We can’t fully disclose how we do things, since it’s part of our family business,” she explained when asked about the specifics of their lobster preparation.
Anthony’s ideal lobster roll, she noted, is found back at Jordan Lobster Farm, where she has nostalgic ties.

This 50-year-old establishment stands out, giving visitors a chance to see live lobsters and choose their meals fresh from the tank.
Owner Steve Jordan mentioned that fewer places are making lobster rolls due to city restrictions. Yet, he values the loyal clientele who return with their families. “We’re trying to keep prices reasonable,” he said, underscoring the commitment of his team.
They even created a poster reading, “You need a bigger bib,” emphasizing the fun experience.
Jordan enjoys the friendly atmosphere at the nearby Point Lookout Clam Bar too. Not only does he appreciate their fresh rolls, but he also values the excellent service they provide.
