New Spin-off Dutton Ranch Takes Viewers to Texas

The much-anticipated spin-off of Yellowstone, titled Dutton Ranch, sees familiar faces Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) and Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) along with Carter (Finn Little) leave Montana behind and head down to Texas.

According to Paramount+, the synopsis for Dutton Ranch is intriguing. “Cole Hauser and Kelly Reilly return as the fearless Rip and Beth.” Now in Texas, they face new challenges as they attempt to carve out a future away from Yellowstone’s shadows. However, they quickly find themselves at odds with a ruthless rival ranch determined to maintain its hold on the region. In South Texas, it seems that blood ties matter more than ever, and the path to survival could come at a steep price—one that might cost your very soul.

The series premiered on May 15 with a two-episode launch, introducing Rio Paloma, Texas, described as a small town about an hour from the border, where ranch life, rodeos, and Texas pride flourish.

Is Rio Paloma, Texas Real?

So, is Rio Paloma a real place? Technically, no—it’s a fictional town created for the Dutton Ranch universe, yet it’s heavily inspired by authentic Texas locales.

Where Was Dutton Ranch Filmed?

In a statement from Brooks Williams, the City Manager of Ferris City, Texas, it was revealed that this city, with a population around 5,000, has been chosen as the main filming site for the spin-off. The production aims to showcase the town’s charm and versatility, filmed in various locations throughout the city.

“It’s a proud moment for Ferris,” Williams remarked. “Our city has a rich history and has contributed to Texas’s development. Paramount’s decision to film here highlights our community’s legacy while looking to the future.” He conveyed enthusiasm for what this could mean for the town’s identity going forward.

Ferris City lies in both Dallas and Ellis counties, roughly 32 miles south of downtown Dallas. However, Primetimer reports that other Texas sites were also utilized. For instance, scenes featuring the rival ranch and the new Dutton Ranch were filmed in Weatherford, Texas, near Sheridan’s Bosque Ranch (with Dutton Ranch being referred to as Sanders Ranch).

Without revealing too much, the characters do make a trip to Dallas during the season, with filming for certain driving scenes occurring in the actual city. Other locations include Mineral Wells for a tense gas station scene in the premiere, while the Split Heart Bar in episode two is actually Roughnecks Bar and Grill in Rio Vista. Moreover, exterior shots were filmed in Boyd and Cleburne.

Interestingly, creator and director Christina Alexandra Volos mentioned to TV Insider that some parts were filmed in Montana, but the wildfires that came into play were largely shot in Texas.

As the series unfolds, more filming locations are expected to be revealed. Keep an eye out for the latest updates on Dutton Ranch.
