September is here, and that usually means an upcoming Apple event where new features are highlighted, like liquid glass and expanded design options. It’s an exciting time for many, but not everyone with an iPhone will access the latest tech.
Apple has recently announced that its next event will be held at noon ET on September 9. Enthusiastic fans are speculating about the unveiling of the iPhone 17, potentially showcasing a super thin design, along with updates to the Apple Watch and AirPods. The most significant change will likely be iOS 26.
This new software update marks a departure from the company’s previous numerical naming conventions, which have been in place for years. It’s set to be released after the event next week.
Those enrolled in Apple’s Developer Program and Beta Software Program have already had a chance to test some new features. Apart from liquid glass, these updates include snooze options for alarms and the Apple Intelligence feature, which can assist with managing unwanted calls and reminders.
However, whether you’ll be able to use iOS 26 comes down to the age of your device. Apple has a history of dropping support for older models, so some might find themselves unable to access the latest features.
According to Apple, the following iPhone models will receive the iOS 26 update:
- iPhone 16 series (16, 16e, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, 16 Pro Max)
- iPhone 15 series (15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max)
- iPhone 14 series (14, 14 Plus, 14 Pro, 14 Pro Max)
- iPhone 13 series (13, 13 Mini, 13 Pro, 13 Pro Max)
- iPhone 12 series (12, 12 Mini, 12 Pro, 12 Pro Max)
- iPhone 11 series (11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max)
- iPhone SE (2nd generation and newer)
Other Apple devices will also support iOS 26, including:
- Apple Watch series (new second-generation SE, series 6 and lower, and Ultra models)
- iPad Pro (M4 models), various iPad models (including Air and Mini starting from certain generations)
- MacBooks from 2019 onward
There are some limitations too. The new Apple Intelligence feature will only be available on the latest iPhones, specifically the iPhone 15, 15 Pro Max, and all the iPhone 16 models. Additionally, compatible iPad Mini and Mac models with M1 will be included later.
If you’re unsure which device you have, you can check by opening the Settings app on your iPhone and navigating to General. For Mac, it’s accessible through the Apple menu. Apple also has guidance on finding your iPad’s model number.
Even if your device qualifies, it might still be a challenge to download iOS 26 when it’s released. Space limitations, internet connectivity issues, or low battery can delay the process.
No official release date for iOS 26 has been set, but it’s anticipated to be available later this month. Typically, previous major updates have rolled out within a week of their respective Apple events.
