Following a thorough internal investigation and a report from the Dowagiac Union School School Resource Officer (SRO), we confirmed that the assistant basketball coach was involved in a post-game incident with officials. Immediate action has been taken and the individual is not associated with or employed in any capacity with the district.

Benton Harbor Area School explicitly condemns and does not tolerate any acts of violence. We understand that competitive events can generate intense emotions for both adults and students, but the incident that occurred following last week's district basketball game is unacceptable and deeply concerned.

Regarding the students involved, we cannot provide specific details as we are bound by FERPA regulations. However, we ensure that the district is actively considering this issue in full compliance with the board's policies, procedures and the Student Code of Conduct.

We maintain close communication with other schools involved and are also involved in productive discussions with executive staff at the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA). Our focus is not only to address the events of February 26th, but more importantly, to implement comprehensive measures to prevent such incidents from recurring. Our dialogue with the MHSAA will continue as we work collaboratively to promote a safe and respectful environment for all participants.
