Sen. Gallego Critiques Trump’s Ballroom Project
During an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday, Senator Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.) criticized President Donald Trump, comparing his actions to those of Marie Antoinette in regard to the new ballroom project at the White House.
Host Kristen Welker brought up the controversial demolition of the east wing of the White House, which was cleared to make way for the ballroom. This decision has sparked backlash not only from Democrats but also from some Republicans. Welker cited former Republican Congressman Joe Walsh’s comment regarding future Democratic presidential candidates, who might pledge to remove Trump’s ballroom and restore the east wing. She asked Gallego if he believed this was an exaggeration or if he agreed with the sentiment, particularly concerning the implications for a future Democratic president.
Gallego responded, suggesting, “To really annoy him, you could just name it the Barack Obama Ballroom. I think that solves half the problem.”
Welker then interjected, asking him not to advocate for its destruction.
Gallego continued, critiquing the project as a “distraction.” He expressed concern that Trump was focused on social events rather than pressing issues like high inflation and the struggles Americans face in purchasing necessities. “The turf wars are happening because he feels bad about people speaking negatively about him,” Gallego said. He emphasized the need to address the challenges facing 24 million Americans rather than concentrating on projects that don’t benefit the public directly. “People should live a decent standard of living,” he concluded, voicing frustration over the priorities displayed by the administration.
