White House calls TikTok's vow to ‘go dark’ without Biden support ‘a stunt’

The White House warned in a statement Saturday that TikTok would “go dark” on Sunday unless President Biden pulls a “stunt,” insisting the app didn't need to take action before President-elect Trump takes office.

“We have seen the latest statement from TikTok. This is a stunt and there is no reason for TikTok or any other company to take any action in the days leading up to the inauguration of the Trump administration on Monday,” outgoing press secretary Karine said. Jean-Pierre said in a statement on Saturday.

“We have stated our position clearly and candidly. Action to implement this law will be up to the next administration. So TikTok and other companies should take any concerns with them. ” she added.

“President Biden and the Department of Justice have failed to provide service providers with the clarity and assurances they need,” TikTok said in a statement after the Supreme Court chose to uphold the law banning the app from the United States on Friday. ” he said. Unless the parent company in China sells it.

The country's high court sided with the Biden administration just days before Trump's inauguration, finding that the anti-sale law does not violate the First Amendment and ruling the ban is set to go into effect Sunday.

The White House announced Friday that the ban on TikTok would be left to the Trump administration, saying the president-elect would consider the app's future after taking office.

Biden signed a bipartisan bill passed by Congress last April that gives TikTok's parent company ByteDance 270 days to withdraw from the app or face a ban from U.S. app stores. A reprieve was granted.
