White House changes statement against gender surgeries for minors after pressure from Human Rights Campaign and other activists

The Human Rights Campaign said the pressure campaign forced the White House to soften its statements opposing transgender surgery on minors.

The Biden administration released the brief statement after it came under fire for reports that Rachel Levin, the transgender assistant secretary at the Department of Health and Human Services, sought to eliminate age recommendations for gender reassignment surgery.

“That is scientifically and practically wrong.”

“The government does not support surgery on minors.” response From the White House.

In a separate, longer statement, it said it supported “gender-affirming care” for minors, including mental health care.

“These are deeply personal decisions and we believe these surgeries should be limited to adults. We continue to support gender affirming care, including psychiatric care, for minors and respect the role of parents, families and physicians in these decisions,” the statement read.

Transgender activists immediately slammed Biden for not supporting the LGBTQ+ movement’s controversial policies.

“The Biden administration is completely wrong on this point,” HRC President Kelly Robinson said. “It’s wrong on science and content, and it’s inconsistent with other steps the administration has taken to support transgender youth.”

On Tuesday, the administration released an explanation. according to To transgender activist Erin Reid.

“These are deeply personal decisions and we believe these surgeries should be limited to adults,” the statement read. “We continue to support gender affirming care for minors, which represents a continuum of care, and we respect the role of parents, families and physicians in these decisions.”

According to the Human Rights Campaign, activists pressured the administration to issue a clarification supporting a “continuum of care” rather than simply “mental health care.”

HRC claimed credit for changing the White House statement.

“This is progress, but we need to keep working harder. The pressure is working. This wouldn’t have happened without all of us working together.” Said Robinson said in an email.

But Reed said that’s not enough.

“Notably, the recent revisions to the White House statement still contain harmful opposition to surgery, including top surgery for those under 18, which could lead to purple state Democrats targeting transgender care,” the activists said. Posts On social media.

“We need to debate this issue on the floor of the House of Representatives so the American people know if their representatives support child sexual abuse.”

Republican Congressman Dan Crenshaw of Texas I got it. The congressman opposed the changes and called on Democrats to go on the record about the controversial surgery.

“The White House is now saying they are against sex reassignment surgery for minors. This is the exact opposite of what their administration has done so far. It’s time for Democrats to come out and say it. They’ve supported pseudoscience and now even their own administration is backing down. We need to debate this issue on the House floor so the American people know if their representatives support child mutilation,” Crenshaw said.

“I’ve already passed a bill in committee that would have banned funding for children’s hospitals that perform sex-reassignment surgeries on minors. Every single Democrat opposed it,” he said. Added“What will they do in the House of Representatives?”
