White House declines Comer testimony invite, declaring impeachment investigation ‘over’

President Biden has refused to appear for House impeachment investigators, writing through his lawyer in a letter Monday that the “investigation is closed.”

The letter, although brief, cuts into the impeachment inquiry led in part by House Oversight Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.), which has yet to uncover any wrongdoing by President Biden. do not have.

“The ‘impeachment inquiry’ that your committee claims has actually only succeeded in uncovering a wealth of evidence that the president has done nothing wrong. But instead of acknowledging this reality, you ‘s March 28, 2024 letter contains a litany of the same false claims that have been repeatedly debunked and refuted by the very witnesses you called to the Committee and the numerous documents you obtained. ” said Richard Sauber. The president’s special counsel wrote in a letter to Comer obtained by The Hill.

“Your insistence on promoting these false and unsubstantiated claims despite ample evidence to the contrary makes one thing abundantly clear about your investigation: It’s not important to you.”

CNN first reported Sauber’s reaction.

Comer’s March letter to President Biden contained a number of dubious claims designed to link the president to various family business deals.

It also became clear that Kamel was being relied upon to investigate areas related to President Biden’s activities as vice president of Ukraine. Authorities recently arrested a former FBI informant who was charged with fabricating allegations that Biden accepted bribes in connection with his work with the FBI and lying to the agency.

Sauber also pointed out that Comer and other Republicans have discussed filing criminal charges based on the results of the investigation, rather than bringing charges through impeachment, and the chairman also reiterated that policy in a fundraising email. He pointed out that it was raised.

“As our office has proven, and as you acknowledged in your recent fundraising email, your impeachment inquiry is closed,” Sauber wrote.

Impeachment has been on the back burner in the House in recent weeks as the House prioritizes other deadlines and support in the Republican conference has waned.

Republican lawmakers have become more open in recent weeks about whether Comer and other investigators have amassed enough evidence to build a case against President Biden.

Meanwhile, Democrats are pressing Comer to name crimes President Biden could be charged with.

The letter arrived the night before Comer proposed testifying to President Biden, but the chair had not yet scheduled a hearing.

“The apple doesn’t fall far from the Biden family tree. Like his son Hunter Biden, President Biden refuses to testify publicly about the Biden family’s rampant corrupt influence.” Comer said in a statement, nodding to Hunter Biden’s refusal to appear at the hearing after testifying privately.

Comer went on to suggest that President Biden is not telling the truth about the extent to which he has interacted with his son’s business associates, naming a number of people he would like to hear from the president. The list also includes Mykola Zlochevsky, the head of Ukrainian energy company Brimsa, and a former FBI informant who was indicted on charges of bribing the Biden family.

“Unfortunately, President Biden is unwilling to answer questions in front of the American people and refuses to answer some of the very simple and straightforward questions we included in our invitation.” Is the question that difficult to answer?” Comer said.
