WASHINGTON – The ongoing situation at the Pentagon now features a new key player. Known by critics as “Rasputin Ricky,” Ricky Bria is the de facto chief of staff for the Secretary of Defense.
At 43, Bria is an uncommon figure in the Biden administration, often critiquing Vice President JD Vance’s “Wakkammie Crazy” and “isolationist” stance. Described as “incredibly intelligent and hardworking,” he has a reputation as a “Chinese hawk” and is acknowledged for his effective management skills, though the White House has hesitated to officially appoint him due to worries about his rapport with the commander-in-chief.
“There’s definitely an ideological factor in play,” a critic noted, referring to Hegseth’s promotion of Democrats who have utilized their positions to challenge internal rivals, particularly those who have a history of supporting the Magazine Agenda but do not align with the vice president or president’s perspectives.
Bria’s rising profile has sparked debates among those close to Trump, who has consistently altered his views depending on the context. While sometimes opposing military action abroad, he also directs it in specific situations. Bria holds a more interventionist stance than many within Trump’s circle. Yet, some insist on simplifying the issue to just Bria’s difference in ideology with the VP, asserting that Bria’s competence isn’t an element of that conflict.
Despite a recent request to elevate Hegseth’s aide to top advisor being denied, Bria remains integral to Hegseth as he continues as Secretary of Defense. Last month, he played a role in the dismissal of three senior aides, including Dan Caldwell, known for his non-interventionist views.
In conversations with various sources from both the Pentagon and the White House, there’s a shared sentiment about Bria’s rapid ascent since becoming a military aide to Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin.
Although Bria’s criticism of the administration has been somewhat underreported, it’s well-known within government circles. One source suggested that this candidness might come from a belief that he’ll emerge unscathed from recent staff changes.
In February, Bria openly opposed Trump’s decisions regarding immigration and Guantanamo Bay, criticizing the use of resources for border initiatives that he believes distract from focusing on China.
The scope of Bria’s influence on policy implementation remains unclear, as Trump appears to support Hegseth, who is viewed as a hawkish figure yet fosters good relationships with important individuals, including Vance. Following Vance’s public dissent against airstrikes in Yemen against Iran-backed Houthis, Bria explicitly challenged the VP’s foreign policy outlook.
Recently, Bria confronted Vance’s team while visiting the Mexican border, as his requests for helicopter rides were repeatedly denied due to capacity issues.
“We don’t like texting secretaries… we don’t know who’s responding.”
Hegseth’s time at the Pentagon has been marked by reports of a lax attitude towards information security. Concerns have surfaced regarding Buria’s advisory and logistical roles, including managing Hegseth’s personal mobile phone.
According to multiple sources, Bria has repeatedly been seen transporting Hegseth’s phones personally. There are claims of this behavior being more usual within government than realized publicly.
Neither the Pentagon nor the White House provided comments on the situation. Vance’s office merely stated that limited seating was responsible for Bria’s exclusion from certain flights.
Sources speculate that Hegseth values keeping Bria close, opting to avoid adding more complications to an already unstable environment.
The White House resisted Hegseth’s push to establish Bria as Chief of Staff, but leadership continues to evaluate whether Bria should remain as an advisor.
“I think there’s a perception issue with Bria,” one source observed, noting the potential struggles Hegseth faces with aides loyal to him versus those who support the president’s agenda. Many see Bria’s role as significantly influential. Comparisons have been made to the enigmatic Russian figure Grigori Rasputin.
Bria, characterized as a charming helicopter pilot, was one of the first officials to support Hegseth upon his arrival at the Pentagon. He quickly formed a bond with Jennifer Hegseth, becoming close to her and spending time at their Tennessee home.
Jennifer, wary of potential disloyalty, had previously experienced challenges during the Senate confirmation process. Bria reportedly conveyed his loyalty to her by sharing security details about Hegseth.
The exact level of Jennifer’s confidence in Bria remains uncertain, but she appears to have influenced her husband’s decision to oust Caldwell.
Bria has expressed a desire for greater authority, demonstrating remarkable intelligence and a solid work ethic, but it seems he’s positioning himself for some recognition. The reasons behind the dismissals of certain aides have not been made entirely clear, but concerns about possible leaks were cited.
Buria’s survival and Hegseth’s attempt to solidify his position offer a fascinating glimpse into the dynamics at play. Some sources hinted that Buria might be contemplating a bid for the governor of Florida as a Democrat.
In public records, a record of a small donation to a Democratic candidate has surfaced, hinting at Bria’s political aspirations. His interactions on social media also suggest a measure of alignment with anti-Trump sentiments.
These developments point to a complicated landscape, as several notable figures from the prior administration were let go, and questions linger regarding Bria’s future role and political affiliations.
