White House ‘extremely upset’ with coverage of Biden’s age and unpopularity, New York Times publisher reveals

The White House is “extremely offended” by the New York Times’ reporting of President Biden’s age, according to the newspaper’s publisher, AG Sulzberger.

during monday interview Sulzberger said in an interview with the Reuters Institute for Journalism that the Times and other news organizations risk skewing their coverage toward two different extremes when it comes to the 2024 election.

“We will continue to fully and fairly cover not just Donald Trump, but President Joe Biden,” Sulzberger said. “He is a historically unpopular incumbent and the oldest person to hold the job. We have reported extensively on both realities, and the White House is very upset about this. ”

Sulzberger stressed that he was not saying that concerns about Biden’s age are the same or “on par” when compared to Trump’s legal issues.

“They’re different. But they’re both true, and the public needs to know both. And if you overhype one and downplay the other, you’re not going to be in any position in the long run.” There is no reason to trust that.” .

The White House did not respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.

Sulzberger said that in some cases, it is “fair” to criticize the media for being “too euphemistic” or “too viscerally egalitarian” in their coverage of various political candidates.

However, Sulzberger said there was a risk that the media would act as an “opposition” to certain candidates. Emotional journalists may quickly find themselves undermining politicians rather than helping the public understand their policies, underlying concerns, and practices that violate long-held norms. There is.

Last week, Times columnist Ezra Klein called on Biden to halt his re-election campaign.

“I think Mr. Biden, as painful as this is, should find a way to step down as a hero,” he said on his podcast, “The Ezra Klein Show.”

“The people Biden listens to — Barack Obama, Chuck Schumer, Mike Donilon, Ron Klain, Nancy Pelosi, Anita Dunn — they need him to understand this.” Klein added. “Mr. Biden himself might come see it.”

Klain is not the first Times reporter to call for Biden to step down. Opinion columnist Ross Douthat did so last week.

Asked about the importance of creating an opinion section in 2024, Sulzberger said there was “value” in hearing full and carefully considered arguments from “people who don’t think the same way I do.”

“Having a place where you can find arguments that challenge your views is one of the rarest things in today’s society,” he continued. “It’s a place where people’s voices are heard long and deeply. So a great opinion section will ensure that we further our core journalistic mission of helping people make sense of the world, and that we’ll have similar independence.” We are working on this.”
