The White House is pressuring the tech industry over sexually explicit artificial intelligence (AI) images.
President Biden’s White House on Thursday called on tech companies to step up their efforts on the issue of sexually explicit AI deepfakes, as officials want the private sector to check the creation, distribution and monetization of sexually explicit and non-consensual AI deepfakes, according to the Associated Press.
“When generative AI came out, everyone was speculating where the first real harm would be, and we know the answer,” said Arati Prabhakar, director of the White House’s Office of Science and Technology Policy, according to the Associated Press. I think so,” he said.
The report said the Associated Press obtained a document seeking action on behalf of AI developers, payment processors, search engines and those who control app stores before Thursday’s publication.
The government said it should do more to stop the private sector from “monetizing” image-based sexual abuse and should end paid access to sites that promote explicit images of minors, according to the Associated Press.
Prabhakar told The Associated Press that there is a “tremendous acceleration” of non-consensual images resulting from AI, primarily targeting women and girls, and could dramatically change their lives. he said.
“If you’re a teenage girl and you’re a gay child, these are issues that people are experiencing right now,” Prabhakar said. “We’re seeing an acceleration because generative AI is moving so fast. And the quickest thing is for companies to step up and take responsibility.”
Biden said in a post on social platform X on Tuesday that AI companies “must earn our trust” before they can change people’s lives.
“Artificial intelligence and the companies that harness its potential will change the lives of people around the world. There’s no doubt about it,” Biden said in the post. “But first they have to earn our trust.”
“I am committed to doing everything in my power to promote and demand safe, secure, reliable, and responsible innovation, including the use of AI-generated voice,” the president continued. Ta. “We want AI companies to join us in this commitment.”
