White House reacts to claims that Trump intends to build a 250-foot 'Independence Arch'

President Donald Trump is moving forward with a grand plan to construct a massive Arc de Triomphe in Washington, D.C. The White House believes that this project could become one of the most iconic structures in the world. However, there are concerns from critics who argue that such a monument might overshadow nearby historical sites like the Lincoln Memorial.

In a statement to the press, the White House emphasized that this monument forms a key part of Trump’s legacy and vision, especially in light of the upcoming 250th anniversary of the nation. White House Press Secretary Davis Engle remarked, “The Arch will become one of the most iconic landmarks not only in Washington, D.C., but around the world.” He added that Trump’s vision has left an indelible mark on America that will resonate for future generations.

According to reports, Trump has shared his desire for a 250-foot-tall freestanding arch, which would significantly alter the skyline near the Arlington Memorial Bridge. In comparison, the White House is approximately 70 feet tall, while the Lincoln Memorial stands about 100 feet, meaning the new structure would dominate its surroundings.

Earlier this month, Trump stirred interest in the idea by showcasing design renderings of the proposed monument on Truth Social. These images were inspired by classic European arches and featured large columns, a broad central opening, and elaborate decorations. Additionally, he has displayed scale models at White House events, underscoring his direct involvement in the design.

Though he has discussed this idea since late last year, mentioning that construction could start within a couple of months, it’s worth noting that no actual work has commenced yet. Trump stated, “It hasn’t started yet. It’s going to start in the next two months. It’s going to be great. Everybody is happy,” while expressing optimism about the project’s reception.

The memorial is expected to be privately financed using leftover funds from the White House Ballroom Project. However, many details of the project remain unfinished. The White House has not disclosed specifics such as the monument’s cost, location, or final height. Furthermore, some architects and historians have raised concerns regarding the potential impact of such a large monument on the historic landscape surrounding Memorial Circle.
