After Zoran Mamdani’s win in the recent mayoral election, the White House retracted a social media post that included a modified New York Knicks logo, following the team’s reported outreach to officials.
Shortly after Mamdani triumphed over Andrew Cuomo and Curtis Sliwa, an image was shared on X—formerly Twitter—featuring the logo with the text “Trump is your president.” However, this post was taken down on Wednesday, as the Knicks apparently contacted the White House about it.
The decision to delete the post was voluntary, as per reports. The Knicks issued a statement, saying, “We remain neutral on political issues. We hope all elected officials perform well in their roles.”
In a related development, Mamdani received a cease-and-desist letter from the Knicks after utilizing an altered team logo that said “New York Zoran” in an advertisement during the NBA’s season opener, which included various clips and crowd noise. While the Knicks initially approached Mamdani’s team regarding the advertisement, they claimed they received no response, prompting the letter and subsequent removal of the ad.
The Knicks expressed that their logo was used unlawfully, stating, “We want to clarify that we do not endorse Mr. Mamdani as a candidate for mayor. We will explore all legal options to protect our rights.”
Mamdani did not provide comments in response to inquiries from the media. On a related note, Cuomo and Mayor Eric Adams, who had withdrawn from the race to support Cuomo, were seen at the Knicks’ home opener on October 24, while Mamdani was reportedly present at the game ahead of the voting.
In the aftermath of Mamdani’s victory, former President Donald Trump criticized him, labeling him a “communist” and suggesting that the city’s residents had “installed communists” into power.
Trump remarked about past failures, saying that communists, Marxists, and socialists had been given opportunities but ultimately delivered only failure. He expressed curiosity about what this newly elected leadership would bring to New York.
