Possible New Charges for Lincoln Memorial Vandalism
After federal prosecutors moved to drop felony charges against a man, White House officials have reportedly asked the Department of Justice (DOJ) to explore the possibility of filing fresh charges connected to the vandalism of the Lincoln Memorial’s recently renovated reflecting pool.
Previously, Olympic canoeist David Hahn was accused of damaging the $14 million project, which had cracks, algae growth, and peeling sealant. The decision to dismiss the case was made by U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro’s office on July 31, citing an investigation that indicated the damage stemmed from installation issues instead of intentional vandalism.
According to reports, after the dismissal, White House officials reached out to the DOJ to consider charging Hahn with a misdemeanor. There’s still no final word on the matter.
In reaction, Hahn’s legal team expressed that pursuing a new case could damage the DOJ’s credibility, as the original prosecution had already acknowledged the lack of evidence supporting their allegations. They described the situation as “shocking,” pointing out that it would be strange for a case dismissed due to insufficient evidence to resurface. Their statement came from attorneys associated with various legal groups.
Meanwhile, Hahn’s legal representatives noted that this move could complicate matters further, asserting it raises troubling questions about the integrity of the case.
The Trump administration has consistently asserted that the damage was intentional. President Trump claimed there were cuts in the pool material and mentioned reports of individuals kneeling with their hands in the water in that area. Hahn was identified as a suspect after being seen tugging at a loose section of the pool by U.S. Park Police.
Initially, the damage was estimated to be around $1,000, which led to felony charges against Hahn as of July 2. Trump, meanwhile, urged Pirro to reconsider her decision to drop the case, questioning the connections Hahn has with Democratic fundraising efforts.
He accused Hahn of being tied to notable figures associated with a platform known for its controversial fundraising tactics, claiming these connections warranted further scrutiny.
In closing, tensions surrounding this incident remain high, with mixed opinions about the motivations and implications of pursuing new charges against Hahn.
