White House ridicules 'pathetic' coverage of fentanyl decrease

Fentanyl Trafficking and Political Reactions

The Washington Post is facing criticism from both online commenters and the White House for what some are calling “pathetic” coverage of the decrease in fentanyl smuggling across the border. Reports frame this decline in somewhat “mystical” terms.

Fentanyl, a highly dangerous drug, is typically trafficked into the United States via both the southern and northern borders, largely controlled by cartels and other criminal organizations. The CDC reported that in 2024, fentanyl was linked to 48,422 deaths in the country.

During his presidential campaign, Donald Trump pledged to enhance border security as a means to combat fentanyl trafficking. Since taking office, he has mobilized troops to the southern border, labeling cartels and related groups as “foreign terrorist organizations,” while also imposing sanctions on key cartel figures.

According to the Immigration Research Center, US law enforcement’s seizure of fentanyl—a significant indicator of trafficking activity—has decreased by 50% since the November election. This decline is interpreted as a major reduction in fentanyl smuggling networks.

Significant Law Enforcement Actions

Recent reports indicate that seizures at southern ports have plummeted by nearly 30% compared to the same time last year. The Post suggests that this drop is “mysterious” and speculates on various factors that might contribute, such as shifts in cartel operations, internal conflicts, ingredient shortages, and possibly reduced demand for the drug.

While there’s confusion surrounding the reasons for this trend, the Washington Post implied that public health specialists are worried that Trump administration budget cuts could undermine programs aimed at overdose treatments and addiction recovery.

Political Backlash

Many conservative figures scoffed at the Post’s framing of the situation. Senator Tom Tiffany from Wisconsin dismissed the notion of a “mystical drop,” attributing the decrease to Trump’s policies. Influencer Charlie Kirk echoed this sentiment, highlighting the recent changes since Trump’s presidency.

The official Homeland Security account emphasized that no mystery exists—that drug traffickers’ activities at the border diminished significantly once Trump’s administration took steps to tighten control.

In a contrasting narrative, critics pointed out that the border policy under President Biden continued to leave the U.S. feeling unsafe. One spokesperson noted that fentanyl trafficking had halved since the same period last year, asserting that Trump’s efforts have made Americans safer.

The Washington Post has yet to provide a comment on the controversy surrounding its reporting.
