The Biden administration is refusing to bring back a Maryland man who was mistakenly deported to El Salvador, seeing the contentious situation as a political advantage, highlighting Trump’s perceived strengths.
Democrats and advocacy organizations have raised concerns after Kilmer Abrego Garcia was sent to the notorious El Salvador prison, a move approved by the Trump administration through court proceedings.
Abrego Garcia, a 29-year-old from El Salvador, escaped his home country as a youth fleeing gang violence. In 2019, an immigration judge shielded him from deportation, and a recent court case has brought attention to the administration’s hesitance to allow his return to the U.S.
Instead of backing down, the president and his team faced inquiries regarding their adherence to proper legal channels and court directives, as they questioned Abrego Garcia’s character to justify his immediate deportation.
The White House’s stance on the Abrego Garcia situation became more evident this week. Officials have reiterated that he will not be permitted to return to the U.S., claiming he illegally entered the country from El Salvador.
Authorities have also intensified their portrayal of Abrego Garcia as a threat to public safety.
They have suggested he is part of a violent gang, which his family has denied, disputing claims in court records that linked him to MS-13.
On Wednesday, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) referenced a 2021 court filing made by Abrego Garcia’s wife, who sought a protection order against him. Maryland court documents indicate that the case was dismissed due to her failure to appear in court.
Officials outline several reasons why the administration is pursuing this strategy.
They indicated that the White House’s default strategy is to attack, noting that Trump believes immigration is a critical issue that resonated with his return to office.
According to polling data released last month, nearly 50% of voters supported Trump’s immigration policies, a trend that surpasses his ratings in economic issues within the same survey.
His team is keen to frame Abrego Garcia’s deportation as a means of addressing illegal immigration and depicting Democrats as weak on immigration and crime. They specifically targeted Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) on Wednesday after he visited Abrego Garcia in the infamous prison.
“The rule of thumb here is that whenever they are appealing to the immigration issue, they aim to alter their message,” stated Trump’s associates.
Team Trump appears to favor discussing immigration over current economic challenges.
The focus on Abrego Garcia reemerged this Wednesday as the market was negatively impacted by Trump’s tariff policies, following comments from Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell regarding economic slowdowns and inflation.
Surveys indicate that the economy has become a problematic issue for Trump, although GOP senators have acknowledged the economic implications of Trump’s tariffs, which are now shared with former President Biden.
The White House is also utilizing Abrego Garcia’s case to showcase crimes committed by different immigrants who entered the U.S. illegally, independent of Abrego Garcia’s situation.
On Wednesday, the administration highlighted several crimes linked to individuals who were apprehended in Maryland over recent weeks, although these cases bear no direct connection to Abrego Garcia.
The White House conducted an unplanned press briefing on Wednesday inviting Patty Morin, the mother of a Maryland woman who was killed by an undocumented immigrant unrelated to Abrego Garcia.
This was aimed as a critique of Morin’s home-state senator, Chris Van Hollen.
Morin recounted the horrifying details surrounding her daughter’s murder. Her killer was convicted just the prior week.
“This is about ensuring our children’s safety. It transcends mere politics or electoral concerns,” Morin asserted.
Insiders claim the intent is to remind the public that the White House is successfully enforcing strict immigration policies and fulfilling campaign commitments.
These insiders argued that Democrats are inadvertently providing leverage to the White House by vocally supporting Abrego Garcia and advocating for his return.
An example is Van Hollen, whose attempts to visit Abrego Garcia were thwarted, but he used a subsequent press conference to challenge several assertions from the Trump administration regarding the situation.
“It is both horrifying and tragic that Senator Van Hollen and Democrats, who commend the El Salvador visit, cannot view this objectively through the lens of compassion and common sense towards their constituents,” declared White House spokeswoman Carolyn Leavitt, contending that “Democrats still refuse to respect the will of the American populace.”
However, this does not imply there isn’t political risk associated with the White House’s handling of the Abrego Garcia case.
Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) encountered frustration from constituents at a town hall earlier this week about the Abrego Garcia incident.
Van Hollen stated in a press briefing on Wednesday that he was not the only legislator to visit El Salvador, focusing attention on how Trump’s administration is managing the lawsuit.
This could signal a migration of Democratic support away from the White House’s approach A YouGov poll released this week found 44% of respondents believed the Trump administration contravened a court order when deporting immigrants. Meanwhile, 27% disagreed, with 30% uncertain.
Even among Republicans, there are concerns about adhering to Supreme Court orders that compel the administration to facilitate Abrego Garcia’s return.
“I believe the appropriate course of action would be to comply with the judge’s ruling and the Supreme Court’s directives. This was, in fact, an oversight, a mistake that should not have happened,” remarked Gordy. “However, we must ensure that the law is followed regardless of personal viewpoints.”
