White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan says the White House will impose new sanctions targeting Iran’s missile and drone programs following Iran’s “unprecedented” airstrikes against Israel. Ta. announced on tuesday.
The new sanctions, scheduled to take effect “in the coming days,” will punish Tehran for the weekend’s attack on Israel.
Sullivan said the new sanctions would target “entities” that support the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and Iran’s Ministry of Defense.
“These new sanctions and other measures will continue the steady drumbeat of pressure to contain and degrade Iran’s military capabilities and effectiveness, and to confront the full range of Iran’s problematic behavior,” Sullivan said. ” he said.
Iran launched more than 300 missiles and drones toward Israel on Saturday night in response to an Israeli airstrike in early April that killed several Iranian military personnel in Damascus, Syria. Most of the drones and missiles were shot down by Israel and its allies.
“President Biden is coordinating with allies and partners, including the Group of Seven, and bipartisan leaders in Congress, for a comprehensive response,” Sullivan said.
“We expect our allies and partners to impose their own sanctions soon,” he said.
The United States has imposed sanctions on Iran, aimed at preventing Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons and putting pressure on its economy.
Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen also pointed to the sanctions at a press conference on Tuesday. She warned that Iran’s actions could lead to “economic spillovers.”
“Iran’s actions, from this weekend’s attacks to the Houthi offensive in the Red Sea, threaten regional stability and could cause economic ramifications,” he said Tuesday, according to the Associated Press. ” he said.
Yellen also referred to past sanctions imposed by the Biden administration on Iranian funding entities.
“Since taking office, I have targeted more than 500 individuals and entities connected to terrorism and terrorist financing by the Iranian regime and its proxies,” Yellen said, according to the Associated Press.
